Situated in the centre of Scotland, a fine garden was likely in place here as early as the 1630's, when the centre sundial, carved by Charles I's master mason, was put in position. Queen Victoria and Prince Albert visited here in 1842 and "walked in the garden which is really very fine, with terraces, like an old French garden" However, the garden as it is now was replanted in the 1950's.
