Dusshera is the Hindu festival to celebrate the triumph of good over evil, and marks the defeat of the demon king Ravana in the epic Ramayana. Huge effigies of Ravana are burnt amidst the bangs and booms of fireworks.

Dusshera marks the end of an annually held ten days of ceremonies, rituals, fasting and feasts in honour of the Mother Goddess— known variously as Durga, Bhavani, Amba, Chandika, Gauri, Parvati, Mahishasuramardini.

Celebrated by Hindus around the world, these panoramas illustrate the event which took place at dusk on Calton Hill in Edinburgh on 5th October 2008. In perfect weather a parade through the streets culminated in a traditional firework display and the burning of effigies which had been constructed by prisoners of the nearby Saughton Prison.
