There has been substantial river traffic on the Firth of Clyde for centuries, a history of worldwide trade and conflict. This illustration of a contemporary passenger route, from Gourock to Dunoon, is operated by the (controversially) state subsidised Caledonian MacBrayne, and provides a link between two banks of the mainland, saving hours of driving for commuters, tourists, and hauliers.
CalMac operates throughout Scotland providing an essential and substantial service to many island communities. The Gourock to Dunoon route is the only one where CalMac faces competition, from its only rival Western Ferries. Recent political intrigue has been aroused by protests from Western Ferries about what it regards as unfair state subsidy on this particular route.
However throughout Scotland CalMac is both loved and loathed by the communities it serves, and comments and discussion will inevitably continue.
