Edinburgh, the capital city of Scotland since the 15th century, became a Unesco World Heritage Site in 1995. The guidelines on World Heritage Sites recommend that historic urban centres should only be included on the World Heritage List if they are of exceptional interest. Thus Edinburgh has joined the company of world famous locations such as the Taj Mahal in India, The Great Wall of China, the Medieval City of Rhodes, The Yosemite National Park, and many other Sites of renown from every continent of the World.
